We live in the Information Age (also called the Digital Age).  We have access to tools and information 24 hours a day-7 days a week.  But finding these tools and learning how to use them can be overwhelming for someone who doesn’t really understand how their computer and the Internet work. The New Computer School can help.

Get to Know Your Computer Better:

An Orientation to Computing and Communicating in the Information Age

March 15 – April 30, 2012

Do you want to understand your computer better?

Do you want to feel more confident using the Internet?

Do you want to stop relying on other people to help you and start helping yourself?

Do you want to stop feeling frustrated and scared you’ll break your computer?

Are you ready to join your friends and family at the technology buffet?

If you answered YES to any of these question, then Get to Know Your Computer Better is for you!

Get to Know Your Computer Better is an eCourse – an electronic course.  It is a series of presentations that teach you the basics so you can interact happily with your computer and stay connected to your clients, friends and family.

  • It is a simple orientation that starts at the beginning.
  • It will fill in your knowledge gaps
  • It will teach you how to use your computer to communicate with clients, friends and family.
  • It will help you function better in the Digital World.

BEGINNER-FRIENDLY DESIGN

When you are learning something completely new, it’s easy to get overwhelmed with too much information. A little bit of knowledge goes a long way.

So Get to Know Your Computer Better has been designed as a true introductory course.  The lessons are foundational.  You will probably know some of the information already – and that’s OK!

This course provides a framework for learning, outlining the essentials so you can “know what you need to know”.  The lessons will not (and cannot) cover topics in exhaustive detail.  Instead they give you “high-level” introduction – the 10,000 foot view.  The goal is to educate you AND empower you to explore technology.

CLEAR AND BASIC LESSONS

Get to Know Your Computer Better is a series short, simple video modules (5-20 minute) you watch on your computer.  The  modules provide an easy-to-understand introduction to each topic.

These easy-to-consume lessons combine an informational presentation with practical show-n-tell using examples.  There are worksheets for you to print and supplementary resources for anyone interested in learning more about each topic.  There are even homework assignments so you can practice.

As part of Get to Know Your Computer Better, you will be invited to submit your questions for a weekly Question & Answer (Q&A) session.  Remember – there are no stupid questions at The New Computer School!

You will also have access to a class discussion forum (and a lesson on how to use it, of course!) On the discussion forum, you can exchange tips and seek help from (and give help to) your fellow participants.

WHAT DO YOU WANT TO DO WITH YOUR COMPUTER?

Most people want to keep in touch with friends and family, share their digital photos, make a flyer for their garage sale (or missing pet) and buy a book or a plane ticket with confidence.  These may sound like simple tasks – but they certainly aren’t things you were born knowing how to do!  That means you need to learn how to do them.

A lot of people have “learned” just enough to get by.  They may have gaps in their knowledge which prevent them from understanding the big picture.  And they are often stunned to learn there is a simpler way – or a smarter way – to do something.

Stop being afraid of your computer and learn how to use it. You can do it! It just takes knowledge of the basics and practice.

Get to Know Your Computer Better is an overview that gives you the knowledge you need to become a proficient computer user.

Get to Know Your Computer Better will introduce you to a variety of things you can do on your computer, from socializing with friends on Facebook to having a video chat session with your grandkids on Skype.  You will learn how to efficiently search for the information you need on Google and how to safely buy a plane ticket (or anything else) online.  Click here to read about the Topics covered.

Get to Know Your Computer Better will also give you the vocabulary and know-how to start asking the right questions and get the help you need.  Click here to read about the Learning Objectives.

Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning stays young. The greatest thing in life is to keep your mind young. — Henry Ford
